ALPINE MEADOWS and BRAVE-NEW-WORLD TOWNS

Grozny – Gudermes – Vedeno – Itum-Kale – Kezenoyam – Argun

This tour is offered on a regular monthly basis. Let us know your desired departure month by clicking on the learn-more button below: we will match your preferences with the next relevant scheduled group departure. If you are still unsure about your desired departure date, then simply tell us a period or a season of the year and we will provide you a range of scheduled group departures: just pick up yours!

Our scheduled group departures don't suit your plans? If you are travelling with more than 4 friends, you can set your own departure date: we will arrange a bespoke tour just for you for the same price per person advertised below. If you are travelling solo or with less than four companions, we will then organise a slightly more expensive tailored tour according to your time schedule and specific geographical preferences.

ITINERARY

The following itinerary refers to our most popular route in Chechnya. This complex and fascinating land greets its temerarious guests with a vast gamut of natural, historical and cultural wonders. In case you are interested in a particularly remote area, secretive ethnicity, unusual activity and/or off-the-beaten-path attraction within the Autonomous Republic of Chechnya or if you are just looking for an hit-and-run visit to Grozny and its surroundings, we can easily meet your needs with a unique tour individually designed according to your wishes. Thanks to our deep knowledge of the territory and longstanding collaboration with independent local guides, we are able to offer you a wide range of tailored routes and bespoke itineraries across and beyond the high peaks and gentle slopes of legendary Chechnya. We also regularly cater for ethnologists, historians and documentarists alike interested in conducting field research in the region. Get in touch for more info on our private tours to Chechnya

DAY 1 - Grozny

  • Our tour guide will meet you in the arrival hall of Grozny International Airport (exact meeting time will be communicated well in advance per email in accordance to your flight schedule).

  • Introductory briefing about the region, the route and the set of rules to observe while travelling in Chechnya.

  • We'll spend the entire day touring and exploring Grozny, a resilient Caucasian metropolis that astonishingly resurged from the ruins and desperation of the recent conflict.

  • Classic highlights: Mother’s Memorial, People Friendship Memorial, Heart of Chechnya Grand Mosque, WW2 Memorial, Akhmat Arena and Grozny City.

  • Offbeat attractions: independent art galleries, traditional dance schools, local burger joints and abandoned buildings in the outskirts of town.

  • Lunch, dinner and overnight in Grozny.

DAY 2 - Argun

  • Today we’ll visit the large towns of the Chechen flatlands, namely Urus Martan, Argun and Gudermes.

  • Once grim theatres of bloody battles and heavy bombings, these Soviet-built urban centres are now experiencing an oil-fuelled renaissance: UAE-style skylines, futuristic mosques and thriving city life.

  • Back in Grozny we’ll spend a slow-paced late afternoon devoted to an in-depth cultural and architectural exploration of the city.

  • Lunch, dinner and overnight in Grozny.

DAY 3 - Itum-Kale

  • In the morning we'll head for the Chechen mountains towards the traditional district of Itum-Kale.

  • We’ll spend the first half of the days visiting medieval watchtowers and traditional Chechen hamlets (auls): little stony jewels dotting a postcard-like mountainscape.

  • Back in Grozny we'll then enjoy a guided tour to the National Museum.

  • Dinner and overnight in Grozny.

DAY 4 - Kezenoyam

  • Early in the morning we'll leave Grozny and head to Kezenoyam, a magnificent mountain lake surrounded by high peaks and green pastures.

  • On our way to the lake we'll stop for some food at the central bazaar of Vedeno, a small town notoriously known for having headquartered frightful Chechen rebels and Arab mujahideen under the command of Al-Khattab and Shamil Basayev, Russia's very own version of Osama bin Laden.

  • After having spent some relaxing time on the lake, we'll pay a quick visit to the nearby ghost village of Khoy and shortly pop into Dagestan, the most feared and least travelled republic in the whole former Soviet Union.

  • Here we'll visit the traditional village of Andi before eventually re-entering Chechnya for our descent to Grozny.

  • Dinner and overnight in Grozny.

DAY 5 - Ingushetia

  • Early in the morning we'll move westwards and head to the tiny Republic of Ingushetia to reach the remote mountain hamlet of Dzheyrakh, famous for its medieval watchtowers looking at the Great Caucasus Range.

  • The Ingushes are an ethnic group closely related to the Chechens and their languages are mutually intelligible; during the good old Soviet days the two people were united under one single geopolitical entity: Chechen-Ingush Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.

  • After lunch we'll head back to the plains and visit Nazran, the largest town of Ingushetia, and Magas the surreal brand-new capital of the republic, where we'll pay a visit to the Ingush Genocide Memorial.

  • We'll then head back to Grozny for the night.

  • Dinner and overnight in Grozny.

DAY 6 - Flight back home or transfer to further destinations

  • After enjoying a last lavish Chechen-style breakfast together we'll take care of your transfer to the airport/train station of choice.

  • For those flying out: transfer to Grozny International Airport for your flight back home.

  • For those wishing to take the train/bus to reach further destinations: transfer to the local train/bus station.

  • End of the tour.
