THE SOVIET SWITZERLAND YOU HAVE NEVER HEARD OF

October 2025 Update: in compliance with the latest amendment (23 October 2025) to EU Council Regulation 833/2014 / Decision 2014/512/CFSP, all tours and tourism related services to the Russian Federation are currently suspended until further notice. This page remains active for informational purposes only. Individual travellers can still legally travel to the Russian Federation without breaching international regulations, though. Russia remains open and welcoming to foreign visitors: don’t let nonsense regulations and bad press scare you away! Please contact us to learn more about your options to visit the Russian Federation, including all locations of the Shoriya Tour described hereunder, without incurring any violation to the existing sanctions against the country.

DAY 1 – Kemerovo

  • Meet-and-greet at Kemerovo International Airport and introductory briefing about the region, the route and the set of rules to observe while travelling in Siberia.

  • Kemerovo sightseeing (traditional wooden houses, striking Soviet monuments and socialist concrete shapes) and transfer to the mining town of Novokuznetsk, a (former) Soviet utopia lost in the wilderness of the Siberian Taiga.

  • Overnight in Novokuznetsk.

DAY 2 to DAY 5 – Shoriya

  • We'll leave Novokuznetsk in the morning and head to Sheregesh, the main settlement in Mountainous Shoriya.

  • We'll then spend four days in Mountainous Shoriya, also known as the Soviet Switzerland, a wild and wide semi-autonomous territory east of the Altai Mountains, mainly inhabited by the indigenous Shors, an obscure Turkic ethnicity adhering to an odd mixture of animistic beliefs, shamanistic traditions and Christian Orthodox faith.

  • We'll make our base in a comfortable hotel in Sheregesh and engage ourselves in several cultural and outdoor activities across the region, which also boasts one of the most popular ski resorts in the former USSR.

  • Highlights will include: cultural tours to some of the most authentic Shor settlements of the area (namely Ust-Anzas and Klyuchevoy), mountain trekking and taiga hiking, Soviet tours to semi-abandoned mining towns such as Tashtagol, traditional cooking and handicraft workshops, and (only in winter) cross-country skiing excursions through the woods and complimentary ski-passes for downhill skiing and snowboarding.

  • Overnights in Sheregesh.

DAY 6 – FAREWELL TO SIBERIA

  • After enjoying a last Shor meal together we'll take care of your transfer to Kemerovo International Airport.

  • End of the tour.
