Breakaway rebellious republics in the former Soviet Union

abkhazia  karabakh  south ossetia  transnistria

During the first chaotic post-communist years, both in the Caucasus and in Eastern Europe, diplomatic and military battles were waged for the sake of territorial sovereignty. The victory of the separatist forces, more or less openly supported by a newly-formed and ill-prepared Russian army, lead to the internationally unrecognised independence of four secessionist regions: Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Nagorno-Karabakh and Transnistria. Regardless of UN-resolutions over their status, these officially "non-existent" countries have now full control over their territory and for the sake of travelling can de-facto be regarded as separate states. The lack of international recognition means, however, that these places have been often left out of the radar even by the most intrepid backpacker and that's a pity as they have so much more to offer than post-Soviet decay and bombed-out buildings. From the lush valleys of Abkhazia to ancient churches of Karabakh, from the socialist grandeur of Transnistria to the tiny mountain hamlets in South Ossetia, we'll take you on an unforgettable journey through the unruly splinters of the Evil Empire

In addition to the itineraries published on the website, we also offer tailored adventures, unusual travel routes and short city trips across and beyond the Unrecognised Countries of the former USSR. Examples include: heli-tours in Abkhazia, nostalgic expeditions to Northern Transnistria and pioneering journeys into Eastern Ukraine. We generally offer tours to the unrecognised countries of the former USSR in combination with another destination in the region (e.g. Transnistria in combo with Moldova, Abkhazia with Georgia, Karabakh with Armenia and so on); however, if you are solely interested in a specific breakaway republic (say South Ossetia only), we can easily design a bespoke itinerary according to your preferences. Just email us at info@soviettours.com for more info about unadvertised tours.

The departing world leaves behind not an heir, but a pregnant widow.
