Resilient people, ancient buddhas and tasty watermelons
Kabul – Bamyan – Band-e-ameer
DAY 1 - Kabul
Our tour guide will meet you either at Kabul International Airport or at your hotel of choice in town (exact meeting time will be communicated well in advance per email in accordance to your flight schedule).
Introductory briefing about the region, the route and the set of rules to observe while travelling in Afghanistan.
Kabul classic and Soviet sightseeing: Darrulaman Palace, National Museum, Shah Do Shamshira Mosque, Omar Landmine Museum, Babur Gardens and the Soviet-built mikrorayon district.
Dinner and overnight in Kabul.
DAY 2 - Bamyan
Early in the morning we will board our Kabul-Bamyan flight.
Bamyan is the capital of the Hazarajat, a historical region dominated by the Hazaras, a mostly Shia Turkic-Mongol ethnicity who make up around 23% of Afghanistan’s population and proudly supported the communist government during the glorious years of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan.
Once in Bamyan we will visit the world-famous and sadly empty Buddha Niches.
After lunch we will stroll around Bamyan Bazar and then head to the photogenic ruins of Shahr-e Gholghola (City of Screams), a medieval town just outside Bamyan, which was conquered by Gengis Khan’s rumbling hordes.
At sunset we will drive through the breathtaking landscapes of Darre-Ajdaha (Dragon valley), before eventually heading back to Bamyan.
Dinner and overnight in Bamyan.
DAY 3 - Band-e-Ameer
Today we will drive to the sublimely gorgeous blue lakes at Band-e-Amir, a series of six deep blue lakes separated by natural dams made of travertine.
Band-e Amir was to become Afghanistan’s first national park in the 1960s but this was delayed due to political crises and the decades of wars, until finally, in 2004, Band-e Amir was submitted for recognition as a World Heritage site; five years later, it became a protected national park, the very first of its kind in the country.
We’ll spend the whole day in the National Park and head back to Bamyan in the late afternoon.
Dinner and overnight in Bamyan.
DAY 4 - Flight back home or transfer to further destinations
After enjoying a last Hazara-style breakfast together we'll take care of your transfer back to Kabul for your trip back home and/or your connection to yet another exciting destination in the region such as Pakistan, Iran or Tajikistan.
End of the tour.
You can also prolong your stay in Afghanistan and undertake an extremely rewarding 7-day tour of the country’s major highlights; please contact us to learn more about this option.
